In 2017 election of Sandakpur Rural Municipality (Ilam district), candidate Udaya Bahadur Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,529 (59.23%) votes out of total votes of 7,646 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Debendra Kumar Subedi of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 2,354 (19.33%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 763 (4.99) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Shobha Parajuli of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,930 (52.96%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Sabita Gurung of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,172 (19.14%) of votes and came in second position. Other 3 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 1,318 (8.88) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 94 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 59 (62.77%) males and 35 (37.23%) females. Moreover, there were total 19 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 5 wards. Same as, total 34 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 18 females and 12 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
