In 2017 election of Suryabinayak Municipality (Bhaktapur district), candidate Basu Dev Thapa of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 12,135 (42.61%) votes out of total votes of 28,480 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Bishnu Raj Karki of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 10,165 (25.03%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 6,180 (10.85) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Juna Basnet of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 12,832 (45.51%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Kalpana Rajthala of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 8,907 (21.71%) of votes and came in second position. Other 5 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,457 (11.45) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 275 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 176 (64.00%) males and 99 (36.00%) females. Moreover, there were total 62 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 108 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 54 females and 34 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
