In 2017 election of Shambhunath Municipality (Saptari district), candidate Yogendra Prasad Chaudhary of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,778 (22.27%) votes out of total votes of 12,473 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Jitendra Prasad Gupta Kalwar of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 2,734 (17.93%) of votes. The rest of 9 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 6,961 (27.90) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Kabita Kumari Sardar of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,606 (22.57%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Shobha Kumari Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 2,445 (17.27%) of votes and came in second position. Other 7 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,497 (28.13) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 414 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 231 (55.80%) males and 183 (44.20%) females. Moreover, there were total 90 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 12 wards. Same as, total 153 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 78 females and 73 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
