Mithila is a Municipality, which is located in Dhanusa district, Province No. 2 of Nepal. Mithila has total 11 wards, which are scattered across 188 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Mithila Municipality had total population of 45,164.

Wardwise Population and Households

As per 2011 population census, Mithila Municipality had total 45,164 population with 22,978 males and 22,186 females. Out of total wards, ward number 3 had the largest population 5,694, while ward number 4 had least number of population with 5,694.

With respect to number of households, Mithila Municipality had total 8,229 households. The ward number 11 had most households with total 1,024, while ward number 5 had least number of households with total 502 number of households.Wardwise Population Chart of Mithila Municipality

As illustrated in the chart, the ratio of male to female population was 1.04, which indicates that Mithila Municipality had -4 percent lower males as compared to the females. Same as, the population to household ratio was 5.49, which means that in average 5.49 family members lived in each household.

Absentee Population

As of 2011, 2,373 population in Mithila Municipality were absent from their households, which equals to 5.25 percent of the total population. Absence of males was 2,268, which equals to 9.87 percent of total 22,978 males. Same as, 105 females were absent, which equals to 0.47 percent of 22,186 females. As illustrated in the charts, the ratio of absentee population was 18.03, while male to female absentee population ratio was 21.60. Same as, the household ratio of present vs. absent population was 3.34.

Population by Age Group

In terms of age, the largest population in Mithila Municipality were between 10 and 14 years of age with total 5,833. Gender wise, there were 2,933 males and 2,900 females of the same age group. The least populated age group was between 70 and 74 with total 624 population, which consistes of 347 males and 277 females. Top 5 most populated age groups were between 10 and 14 (5,833), between 5 and 9 (5,295), between 15 and 19 (5,018), below 4 (4,077), between 20 and 24 (3,996) with total population of 24,219. In contrast, bottom 5 least populated age groups were between 70 and 74 (624), above 75 (644), between 65 and 69 (934), between 55 and 59 (1,318), and between 60 and 64 (1,387) with total population of 4,907. The median age-group of total population falls between 35 and 39 and between 40 and 44 with average population of 2,706.

Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 10 and 14 (2,933), between 5 and 9 (2,732), between 15 and 19 (2,593), below 4 (2,064), and between 20 and 24 (1,958), with total population of 12,280. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (335), between 70 and 74 (347), between 65 and 69 (511),between 55 and 59 (695), and between 60 and 64 (710), with total population of 2,598. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 10 and 14 (2,900), between 5 and 9 (2,563), between 15 and 19 (2,425), between 20 and 24 (2,038), and below 4 (2,013), with total population of 11,939. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (277), above 75 (309), between 65 and 69 (423),between 55 and 59 (623), and between 60 and 64 (677), with total population of 2,309.

The population with age-group 70 to 74 had male to female ratio of 1.25, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 25 to 29 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.91. The age-groups 70 to 74, 65 to 69, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, above 75, 5 to 9, 15 to 19, 60 to 64, below 4, 35 to 39, 10 to 14 had majority of male population while age-groups 20 to 24, 30 to 34, 25 to 29 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 61.46 % (27,757 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 33.67 % with total number of 15,205. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 4.88 % with total number of 2,202. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 38.54 with total number of 17,407

There were 11,594 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 4,077. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 352 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Grade 1-12 Students & Schools

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 8,532 in Mithila Municipality with 4,102 (48.08%) of males and 4,430 (51.92%) females. There were total 31 schools. In average, 275 students were studying in each school.

Population by Castes

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Mithila Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Koiri/Kushwaha caste with total population of 13,044. There were as little as Limbu caste with population of as little as 11 in total. People of several other castes who live in Mithila are Chhetri, Tamang, Magar, Yadav, Brahmin - Hill, Newar, Chamar/Harijan/Ram, Kami, Teli, Majhi, Muslim, Haluwai, Damai/Dholi, Kathbaniyan, Sudhi, Tatma/Tatwa, Kurmi, Musahar, Baraee, Gharti/Bhujel, Khatwe, Sarki, Hajam/Thakur, Brahmin - Tarai, Kalwar, Lohar, Sonar, Rajput, Dhanuk, Dusadh/Pasawan/Pasi, Badhaee, Bin, Gaderi/Bhedhar, Sanyasi/Dashnami, Sunuwar, Rai, Terai Others, Kewat, Mallaha, Thakuri, Dhobi, Kumal, Mali, Marwadi, Dom, Tharu, Kayastha, Gurung, Kumhar, Danuwar, Undefined Others, Halkhor, Chamling, Limbu, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.

Top five castes of people in Mithila Municipality are Koiri/Kushwaha (13,044), Chhetri (4,331), Tamang (4,012), Magar (2,959) and Yadav (2,471) with total population of 26,817, which forms 59.38 percent out of total population of 45,164 in Mithila Municipality.

Population by Disability

Out of total population of 45,164, there were total 660 (1.46%) disabled persons in Mithila Municipality with 398 (60.30%) males and 262 (39.70%) females. The physically disabled persons were 196, while mentally disabled people were 48 and intellectually disabled were 21.

Similarly, there were 96 people who were blind and 112 people were deaf, while 6 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 131 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 50 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation

Out of total 8229 households in Mithila Municipality, there were 359 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 1,263 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 349 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 6,144houses were founded on wood.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 382 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 175 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 6,995 houses had roof of tile, 500 houses had RCC roofs, 44 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 5,338 out of 8,229 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 744 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 2,061 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

Utilities

In Mithila Municipality, there were total 3,765 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 284 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 231 houses had covered well while 3,702 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. With reference to source of fuel, 7,277 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 42 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 210 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (425), bio-gas (175), fuel electricity (4), etc.

Same as, total 6,787 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 1,286, while 30 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.82.

Facilities

out of 8,229 households in Mithila Municipality, 1,050 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 7,000 households reported of using at least one facility. According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 1,079 establishments in Mithila Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 7,283 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 5,043 and female engagement of 2,240 persons.In every business, there were an average of 6.75 people engaged with average males are 4.67 and females are 2.08.
