In 2017 election of Gaur Municipality (Rautahat district), candidate Ajay Kumar Gupta of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 5,223 (50.65%) votes out of total votes of 10,312 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Shambhu Shah of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 2,949 (18.98%) of votes. The rest of 14 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 2,140 (10.38) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Kiran Kumari of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 3,159 (33.98%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Abad Bihari Prasad Teli of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 1,344 (10.79%) of votes and came in second position. Other 16 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 4,795 (25.79) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 333 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 220 (66.07%) males and 113 (33.93%) females. Moreover, there were total 70 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 124 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 58 females and 47 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
