In 2017 election of Buddhabhumi Municipality (Kapilvastu district), candidate Keshav Kumar Shrestha of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,063 (40.40%) votes out of total votes of 24,909 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Rupesh Kumar Shrestha of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 9,926 (28.38%) of votes. The rest of 11 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,920 (9.88) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Mira Tharu of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,032 (40.08%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Manju Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 9,449 (26.95%) of votes and came in second position. Other 9 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 5,550 (11.09) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 290 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 180 (62.07%) males and 110 (37.93%) females. Moreover, there were total 60 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 110 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 51 females and 45 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
