In 2017 election of Bijaynagar Rural Municipality (Kapilvastu district), candidate Gopal Bahadur Thapa of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,512 (31.68%) votes out of total votes of 11,086 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Janaki Prasad Yadav of Independent (Ind) who secured 3,284 (22.50%) of votes. The rest of 9 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 4,290 (19.35) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Laxmi Kumari Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,161 (33.45%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Asuni Kumar Chai of Independent (Ind) secured 1,902 (15.08%) of votes and came in second position. Other 11 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 4,388 (23.21) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 234 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 156 (66.67%) males and 78 (33.33%) females. Moreover, there were total 60 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 7 wards. Same as, total 83 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 35 females and 32 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
