Birgunj is a Metropolitan City, which is located in Parsa district, Province No. 2 of Nepal. Birgunj has total 32 wards, which are scattered across 132 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Birgunj Metropolitan City had total population of 240,922.

Wardwise Population and Households

As per 2011 population census, Birgunj Metropolitan City had total 240,922 population with 127,227 males and 113,695 females. Out of total wards, ward number 16 had the largest population 20,584, while ward number 9 had least number of population with 20,584.

In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (913), between 70 and 74 (1,337), between 65 and 69 (1,883),between 60 and 64 (2,957), and between 55 and 59 (3,218), with total population of 10,308. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 5 and 9 (15,754), between 10 and 14 (14,751), below 4 (12,037), between 15 and 19 (11,258), and between 20 and 24 (10,582), with total population of 64,382. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (843), between 70 and 74 (1,001), between 65 and 69 (1,579),between 60 and 64 (2,406), and between 55 and 59 (2,844), with total population of 8,673.

The population with age-group 70 to 74 had male to female ratio of 1.34, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 30 to 34 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.96. The age-groups 70 to 74, 15 to 19, 50 to 54, 60 to 64, 40 to 44, 65 to 69, 45 to 49, 10 to 14, 55 to 59, 20 to 24, 35 to 39, 5 to 9, above 75, below 4, 25 to 29 had majority of male population while age-groups 30 to 34 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 3.14 % with total number of 7,556. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 40.11 with total number of 96,643

There were 58,970 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 24,626. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 418 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Grade 1-12 Students & Schools

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 9,333 in Birgunj Metropolitan City with 4,473 (47.93%) of males and 4,860 (52.07%) females. There were total 101 schools. In average, 92 students were studying in each school.

Top five castes of people in Birgunj Metropolitan City are Muslim (43,569), Kurmi (23,192), Yadav (15,614), Kanu (15,417) and Teli (8,762) with total population of 106,554, which forms 44.23 percent out of total population of 240,922 in Birgunj Metropolitan City.

Out of total population of 240,922, there were total 1,807 (0.75%) disabled persons in Birgunj Metropolitan City with 1,073 (59.38%) males and 734 (40.62%) females. The physically disabled persons were 667, while mentally disabled people were 174 and intellectually disabled were 48.

Household Foundation

Out of total 39286 households in Birgunj Metropolitan City, there were 1,512 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 21,753 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 4,575 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 10,652houses were founded on wood.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 3,889 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 2,108 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 8,648 houses had roof of tile, 23,177 houses had RCC roofs, 295 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 14,308 out of 39,286 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 19,779 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 4,683 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

Utilities

In Birgunj Metropolitan City, there were total 6,934 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 31,141 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 70 houses had covered well while 38 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. With reference to source of fuel, 22,607 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 480 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 14,708 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (898), bio-gas (27), fuel electricity (28), etc.

Same as, total 35,728 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 2,780, while 71 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.91.

Facilities

out of 39,286 households in Birgunj Metropolitan City, 2,149 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 36,338 households reported of using at least one facility. In those establishments, total 32,910 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 27,242 and female engagement of 5,668 persons.In every business, there were an average of 3.74 people engaged with average males are 3.09 and females are 0.64.
