In 2017 election of Shahidnagar Municipality (Dhanusa district), candidate Udaya Kumar Yadav of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 5,091 (29.31%) votes out of total votes of 17,370 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Devendra Kumar Bharkher of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 4,239 (18.87%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 8,040 (23.14) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Shila Devi Kapri of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 4,712 (27.83%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Sunita Kumari Singh of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,390 (20.28%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 7,832 (23.13) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 270 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 168 (62.22%) males and 102 (37.78%) females. Moreover, there were total 68 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 93 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 45 females and 46 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
