Sugarcane farmers agitated again

The sugarcane farmers here have been agitated again after the sugar mills failed to implement the agreement as per government mediation to pay them for their produce. On January 3, the government and the sugarcane farmers struggle committee had reached an agreement, as per which, the sugar mills would clear the due amount to the farmers by January 21, but in vain.

After the expiry of the term, the cane farmers became agitated again. They said they would wait for one more day and launch the protest again.

The struggle committee shared it by organizing a press meet at Malangawa on Wednesday. As per the recent decision, the farmers would work with black bands and launch a weeklong farmers’ awareness campaign from 25 January. Then, they would be united for the Kathmandu-focused protest, according to struggle committee chair in Sarlahi, Ramswartha Raya.

Mahalaxmi Sugar Mill, Annapurna Sugar Mill, Shreeram Sugar Mill of Sarlahi and Indira Sugar Mill of Nawalparasi have not paid the farmers for their produce for long.
