No military involvement in MCC-US Embassy

Nepal-based US Embassy has clarified that there was no any military affairs in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project.

The US Embassy issued a press release to clarify the MCC affairs when influential leaders of the parties, including ruling Nepal Communist Party and main opposition Nepali Congress protested the multi-million Dollar US project.

Noting that the project is particularly focused on economic development affairs, the embassy made it clear that the project was aimed at supporting Nepal’s bid for economic development through the construction of electric lines and road up-gradation.

"The US law has prohibited military engagement in any MCC project. No military affairs are attached to the MCC. Nepal does not need to align any ally or sign any agreement to join MCC", stated the release.

The US had taken ahead the project for economic enhancement in line with the interest of every government of Nepal and the political parties reaching to the power, the embassy clarified.

"It is a 500 million USD grant where there is no strategic interest. No string is attached there", reads the release.

What Nepal needs to do is to make commitment for transparent spending of the agreed projects, the press release noted.
