125 rehabilitated children released over COVID-19 crisis

A total of 125 children under-rehabilitation in various child correction homes in the district been released. The children who were put in the correction home on various criminal charges were released in the past one week following the Supreme Court’s verdict to release inmates with less than one year of prison sentence over coronavirus fear.

They were rehabilitated at four child correction homes at Sanothimi, Bhaktapur run by United States Education Foundation, Nepal with the help of the Government of Nepal. Of them, 54 were rehabilitated at a child correction centre.

The rehabilitation centre with a capacity of accommodating 110 children housed 264 children, said deputy director of the centre, Keshab Suwal. The rehabilitated children between 12 years of age group, who are mostly from Sindhupalchok, Ramechhap, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Kavrepalanchowk, Kaski, Morang and Banke districts, were put into correction homes after being found guilty of charges of murder, burglary, illegal drug peddling and looting, he said.
