Pact inked for diverting 170 million litres water to Kathmandu

An agreement has been inked with Panchpokhari Thangpal rural municipality in connection with implementing the Yangri Larke Project under the second phase of Melamchi Water Supply Project.

Works are about to be completed under the first phase on pumping 170 million litres water to Kathmandu Valley under the Melamchi Water Supply Project.

Some dispute was there regarding the affected areas and what facilities would be provided to the people in these areas while diverting 340 million litres water to the Kathmandu Valley under the second phase. The dispute has been resolved paving the way for the signing of the agreement.

The rural municipality and the project affected concerned committee had presented nine various demands for diverting water from both the rivers. The Melamchi Water Supply Project Development Committee (MWSPDC) agreed to fulfill the demands.

MWSPDC executive director Tiresh Prasad Khatri and rural municipality chair Tashi Lama signed the agreement. It is believed that implementation of the project would create an environment of trust among the project, the local government and the local community, laying the foundation for the project’s timely completion.

The agreement was signed in the witness of lawmaker from the area Sher Bahadur Tamang and development practitioner Shambhu Prasad Kattel.

It is believed the second phase works of the project will now pick up speed with the signing of the agreement.
