‘World summit among Nepalis needed for preservation of Nepali language’

Senior litterateur and former Chief Minister of Indian State of Sikkim Pawan Chamling ‘Kiran’ has spoken of the need to organize a world summit among the Nepalis for the preservation of Nepali language, literature and culture.

At a programme organized by Nepal Academy here Thursday to welcome Chamling, Chamling said that the government of Sikkim had undertaken various initiatives to promote the Nepali language and literature. "During my tenure as Chief Minister of Sikkim, various researches were conducted on Nepali languages and statue of Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya was installed in various places," said Chamling, pressing for the need to honour literary personalities.

He reminded, "We all are Nepalis irrespective of the diverse places we live." Although he forayed into politics in Sikkim, he would always involve in Nepali literature, Chamling revered Nepali literature.

On the occasion, Nepal Academy’s Chancellor Ganga Prasad Uprety lauded Chamling as a versatile person and highly commended his contribution for fostering Nepali language, literature and cultures in Sikkim. "Although we are differentiated by politics and border, we are united by the culture, religion and language," Uprety said.

Nepal Academy’s Vice-Chancellor Dr Jagman Gurung also shed light on the role played by Chamling in development and expansion of Nepali language despite being born in Sikkim. The 69-year-old Chamling, founding member of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), has served as the Chief Minister of Sikkim for five terms.
