Human Rights violations on the rise

Gandaki state recorded a total of 666 incidents of violation of human rights in the year 2019. During the year, 640 people suffered from violation of their rights, carried out by the state and non-state actors.

The Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) shared the details at an interaction on ‘human rights and human development’ organised here on Friday. INSEC Gandaki coordinator Shiva Khakurel shared the information on human rights violation collected for the human rights year book. Accordingly, 15 women and 185 men fell victim to human rights violation in the year.

Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for Social Development Nardevi Pun said the State had the jurisdiction only to promote mother tongue and include issues in the local level curriculum.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kaski Raj Kumar KC said the police was committed to protection of human rights.

NGO Federation Central General Secretary Ram Prasad Subedi pointed out the need to document the fundamental rights that the people have been able to enjoy.

Other speakers including FNJ Kaski Chair Dipendra Shrestha, Prof Gehendreswar Koirala, Sarita Poudel of Shakti Samuha and Priti Pandey of Pokhara Chamber of Commerce and Industry pointed out the need to increase awareness on human rights, and make it a part of the school curriculum.
