In 2017 election of Sunwal Municipality (Nawalparasi_W district), candidate Bhim Bahadur Thapa Chhetri of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 9,707 (41.07%) votes out of total votes of 23,637 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Bimala Aryal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 9,182 (27.54%) of votes. The rest of 11 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,748 (10.04) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Dadhiram Aryal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 9,910 (42.56%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Tara Devi Bhandari of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 8,554 (25.77%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 4,821 (10.35) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 323 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 189 (58.51%) males and 134 (41.49%) females. Moreover, there were total 72 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 13 wards. Same as, total 120 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 55 females and 53 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
