In 2017 election of Sundarharaicha Municipality (Morang district), candidate Shiv Prasad Dhakal of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 16,822 (45.21%) votes out of total votes of 37,208 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Kedar Prasad Guragain of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 15,854 (29.34%) of votes. The rest of 10 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,532 (6.09) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Dhan Maya Tamang of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 15,801 (42.50%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Binda Dahal of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 13,469 (25.42%) of votes and came in second position. Other 7 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 7,910 (10.64) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 315 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 179 (56.83%) males and 136 (43.17%) females. Moreover, there were total 67 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 12 wards. Same as, total 121 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 58 females and 48 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
