In 2017 election of Shivraj Municipality (Kapilvastu district), candidate Netra Raj Adhikari of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,155 (29.49%) votes out of total votes of 20,871 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Krishna Kumar Chaudhary of Snghiy Samajbadi Form Nepal (SanSFN) who secured 4,762 (17.62%) of votes. The rest of 16 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 9,954 (23.85) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Shiv Kumari Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,962 (36.00%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Sunam Yadav of Snghiy Samajbadi Form Nepal (SanSFN) secured 3,029 (13.45%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 7,571 (22.86) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 387 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 250 (64.60%) males and 137 (35.40%) females. Moreover, there were total 96 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 142 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 63 females and 58 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
