In 2017 election of Phakphokthum Rural Municipality (Ilam district), candidate Ram Kumar Shrestha of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,142 (44.16%) votes out of total votes of 9,380 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Dipendra Khanal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 3,978 (29.42%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 1,260 (6.72) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Saraswati Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,241 (45.66%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Dala Kumari Karki Bista of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,983 (29.44%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 1,064 (5.73) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 134 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 84 (62.69%) males and 50 (37.31%) females. Moreover, there were total 28 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 7 wards. Same as, total 49 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 25 females and 19 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
