In 2017 election of Menchhayayem Rural Municipality (Terhathum district), candidate Yadav Bahadur Khapung of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,683 (49.93%) votes out of total votes of 3,371 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Deu Bahadur Limbu of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 1,496 (29.60%) of votes. The rest of 2 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 192 (2.85) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Geeta Devi Timsina of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 1,486 (45.62%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Dil Kumari Shankar of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,420 (29.94%) of votes and came in second position. Other 2 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 351 (5.39) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 100 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 64 (64.00%) males and 36 (36.00%) females. Moreover, there were total 21 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 6 wards. Same as, total 39 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 18 females and 14 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
