In 2017 election of Matihani Municipality (Mahottari district), candidate Hari Prasad Mandal of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 3,404 (36.96%) votes out of total votes of 9,210 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Mo Mujibal Rahman of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 1,597 (12.66%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 4,209 (22.85) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Shibo Devi Shah of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 3,130 (35.07%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Jumaida Khatun of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 1,650 (13.69%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 4,146 (23.22) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 239 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 146 (61.09%) males and 93 (38.91%) females. Moreover, there were total 54 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 86 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 43 females and 40 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
