In 2017 election of Makalu Rural Municipality (Sankhuwasabha district), candidate Khadga Bahadur Katuwal of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,712 (35.13%) votes out of total votes of 4,874 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Pembatashi Sherpa of Independent (Ind) who secured 1,225 (18.60%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 1,937 (19.87) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Chameli Rai (yamphu) of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,790 (40.42%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Shanta Baniya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 1,475 (23.72%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 1,164 (13.14) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 123 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 76 (61.79%) males and 47 (38.21%) females. Moreover, there were total 25 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 6 wards. Same as, total 46 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 23 females and 16 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
