In 2017 election of Maharajgunj Municipality (Kapilvastu district), candidate Abdul Kalam Musalman of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 7,724 (45.21%) votes out of total votes of 17,084 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Driga Narayan Pandeya of Independent (Ind) who secured 6,745 (27.19%) of votes. The rest of 6 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 2,615 (7.65) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Subhawati Kurmi of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,013 (42.10%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Jivan Kumar Kurmi of Independent (Ind) secured 3,064 (15.10%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 5,206 (18.22) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 321 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 228 (71.03%) males and 93 (28.97%) females. Moreover, there were total 80 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 138 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 44 females and 45 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
