Ilam is a Municipality, which is located in Ilam district, Province No. 1 of Nepal. Ilam has total 12 wards, which are scattered across 173 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Ilam Municipality had total population of 48,536.

As of 2011, 3,012 population in Ilam Municipality were absent from their households, which equals to 6.21 percent of the total population. Absence of males was 2,637, which equals to 11.24 percent of total 23,461 males. Same as, 375 females were absent, which equals to 1.50 percent of 25,075 females. At least one member of 2,435 (21.39 percent) households were absent.

As illustrated in the charts, the ratio of absentee population was 15.11, while male to female absentee population ratio was 7.03. Same as, the household ratio of present vs. absent population was 3.67.

In terms of age, the largest population in Ilam Municipality were between 10 and 14 years of age with total 5,550. However, gender wise largest population age group differs from the total population, such as largest male population falls between 10 and 14 with total 2,901 while female population falls between 15 and 19 with total 2,862 population. The least populated age group was between 70 and 74 with total 666 population, which consistes of 369 males and 297 females. Top 5 most populated age groups were between 10 and 14 (5,550), between 15 and 19 (5,522), between 5 and 9 (4,975), between 20 and 24 (4,870), between 25 and 29 (4,093) with total population of 25,010. In contrast, bottom 5 least populated age groups were between 70 and 74 (666), above 75 (843), between 65 and 69 (1,020), between 60 and 64 (1,454), and between 55 and 59 (1,798) with total population of 5,781. The median age-group of total population falls between 35 and 39 and between 40 and 44 with average population of 3,042.

Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 10 and 14 (2,901), between 15 and 19 (2,660), between 5 and 9 (2,536), between 20 and 24 (2,081), and below 4 (1,741), with total population of 11,919. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (369), above 75 (437), between 65 and 69 (535),between 60 and 64 (734), and between 55 and 59 (944), with total population of 3,019. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 15 and 19 (2,862), between 20 and 24 (2,789), between 10 and 14 (2,649), between 5 and 9 (2,439), and between 25 and 29 (2,383), with total population of 13,122. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (297), above 75 (406), between 65 and 69 (485),between 60 and 64 (720), and between 55 and 59 (854), with total population of 2,762.

The population with age-group 70 to 74 had male to female ratio of 1.24, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 25 to 29 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.72. The age-groups 70 to 74, 55 to 59, 10 to 14, 65 to 69, above 75, below 4, 5 to 9, 50 to 54, 60 to 64 had majority of male population while age-groups 40 to 44, 15 to 19, 35 to 39, 30 to 34, 20 to 24, 25 to 29 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups 45 to 49 had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 66.16 % (32,112 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 28.63 % with total number of 13,895. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 5.21 % with total number of 2,529. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 33.84 with total number of 16,424

There were 14,470 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 3,370. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 233 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 4,462 in Ilam Municipality with 2,058 (46.12%) of males and 2,404 (53.88%) females. There were total 81 schools. In average, 55 students were studying in each school.

Out of total population, 14,020 female speaks Nepali language, while 13,003 male speaks Nepali language.Details information about languages spoken by male and female groups of population has been illustrated in the table.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Ilam Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Brahmin - Hill caste with total population of 9,580. There were as little as Chamling caste with population of as little as 12 in total. People of several other castes who live in Ilam are Chhetri, Rai, Limbu, Tamang, Newar, Gurung, Kami, Magar, Damai/Dholi, Sunuwar, Sarki, Yakkha, Sherpa, Gharti/Bhujel, Undefined Others, Lepcha, Pattharkatta/Kushwadiya, Sanyasi/Dashnami, Bhote, Terai Others, Tharu, Muslim, Marwadi, Hajam/Thakur, Rajbansi, Haluwai, Thakuri, Lohar, Teli, Yamphu, Hyolmo, Bangali, Samgpang, Yadav, Dalit Others, Thami, Musahar, Dhimal, Chamling, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.

Top five castes of people in Ilam Municipality are Brahmin - Hill (9,580), Chhetri (9,392), Rai (7,557), Limbu (6,012) and Tamang (3,288) with total population of 35,829, which forms 73.82 percent out of total population of 48,536 in Ilam Municipality.

Out of total population of 48,536, there were total 1,154 (2.38%) disabled persons in Ilam Municipality with 624 (54.07%) males and 530 (45.93%) females. The physically disabled persons were 441, while mentally disabled people were 103 and intellectually disabled were 31.

Similarly, there were 171 people who were blind and 142 people were deaf, while 24 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 123 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 119 people had multiple disabilities.

Out of total 11383 households in Ilam Municipality, there were 7,390 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 1,429 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 689 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 1,018houses were founded on wood.

With respect to wall of the houses, 6,805 houses were mud bonded, 2,191 houses were cement bonded, 363 houses were wood planks bonded, 1,603 houses were bamboo bonded and 107 houses had unbaked bricks on their outer walls.Rest of the houses were reported of having other types of outer wall, while some of them reported nothing of having the outer wall bonding.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 1,039 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 8,899 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 59 houses had roof of tile, 1,150 houses had RCC roofs, 17 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 673 out of 11,383 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 5,736 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 4,880 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

In Ilam Municipality, there were total 9,132 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 15 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 43 houses had covered well while 239 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. Other resources of water facilities were spout water (1526) and river stream (185), which were reported of the household's source of water.

With reference to source of fuel, 8,726 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 99 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 2,176 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (10), bio-gas (228), fuel electricity (20), etc.

Same as, total 10,057 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 1,042, while 45 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.88.

out of 11,383 households in Ilam Municipality, 787 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 10,524 households reported of using at least one facility. Households using at least one facility, such as radio, television, internet, etc. have been illustrated in the table below.MobilePhone was used by the maximum households with total users of 8,984, while Radio was the next mostly used facilities with total household users of 7,948.

According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 2,757 establishments in Ilam Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 7,790 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 4,406 and female engagement of 3,384 persons.In every business, there were an average of 2.83 people engaged with average males are 1.60 and females are 1.23. The ratio of male to female engagement in the establishments are 1.30, which means as many as 1.30 males are enagement in the economic activities per female.
