In 2017 election of Gurbhakot Municipality (Surkhet district), candidate Hasta Pun of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 10,063 (53.11%) votes out of total votes of 18,948 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Dev Bahadur Khatri of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 7,123 (24.55%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 1,762 (4.65) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Maina B.k of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 9,974 (52.61%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Sushila Kumari Bishwokarma of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 7,266 (25.11%) of votes and came in second position. Other 2 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 1,719 (4.53) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 251 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 144 (57.37%) males and 107 (42.63%) females. Moreover, there were total 51 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 14 wards. Same as, total 95 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 49 females and 46 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
