In 2017 election of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City (Rupandehi district), candidate Shiv Raj Subedi of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 23,249 (50.58%) votes out of total votes of 45,961 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Khel Raj Pandeya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 20,851 (30.13%) of votes. The rest of 14 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 1,861 (2.02) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Guma Devi Acharya of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 25,301 (59.56%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Jagat Bahadur Pokharel of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 14,792 (21.82%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 2,387 (2.81) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 433 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 265 (61.20%) males and 168 (38.80%) females. Moreover, there were total 100 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 19 wards. Same as, total 161 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 80 females and 66 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
