In 2017 election of Birendranagar Municipality (Surkhet district), candidate Dev Kumar Subedi of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 14,405 (39.48%) votes out of total votes of 36,490 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Balaram Sharma of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 13,899 (27.31%) of votes. The rest of 11 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 8,186 (11.22) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Mohan Maya Bhandari of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 16,068 (44.33%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Janaki Singh of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 14,026 (26.81%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,151 (8.49) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 403 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 241 (59.80%) males and 162 (40.20%) females. Moreover, there were total 93 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 16 wards. Same as, total 147 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 73 females and 67 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
