Baraha is a Municipality, which is located in Sunsari district, Province No. 1 of Nepal. Baraha has total 11 wards, which are scattered across 222 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Baraha Municipality had total population of 77,408.

Wardwise Population and Households

As per 2011 population census, Baraha Municipality had total 77,407 population with 35,561 males and 41,846 females. Out of total wards, ward number 7 had the largest population 8,737, while ward number 4 had least number of population with 8,737.

With respect to number of households, Baraha Municipality had total 17,552 households. The ward number 7 had most households with total 2,018, while ward number 4 had least number of households with total 1,120 number of households.Wardwise Population Chart of Baraha Municipality

As illustrated in the chart, the ratio of male to female population was 0.85, which indicates that Baraha Municipality had 15 percent lower males as compared to the females. Same as, the population to household ratio was 4.41, which means that in average 4.41 family members lived in each household.

As of 2011, 7,335 population in Baraha Municipality were absent from their households, which equals to 9.48 percent of the total population. As illustrated in the charts, the ratio of absentee population was 9.55, while male to female absentee population ratio was 8.60. Same as, the household ratio of present vs. absent population was 2.02.

Population by Age Group

In terms of age, the largest population in Baraha Municipality were between 10 and 14 years of age with total 10,076. Gender wise, there were 5,073 males and 5,003 females of the same age group. The least populated age group was between 70 and 74 with total 1,424 population, which consistes of 686 males and 738 females. Top 5 most populated age groups were between 10 and 14 (10,076), between 15 and 19 (8,884), between 5 and 9 (8,707), below 4 (6,611), between 20 and 24 (6,242) with total population of 40,520. In contrast, bottom 5 least populated age groups were between 70 and 74 (1,424), above 75 (1,805), between 65 and 69 (1,880), between 60 and 64 (2,657), and between 55 and 59 (2,852) with total population of 10,618. Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 10 and 14 (5,073), between 5 and 9 (4,423), between 15 and 19 (4,249), below 4 (3,313), and between 20 and 24 (2,376), with total population of 19,434. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (686), above 75 (880), between 65 and 69 (912),between 60 and 64 (1,254), and between 55 and 59 (1,429), with total population of 5,161. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 10 and 14 (5,003), between 15 and 19 (4,635), between 5 and 9 (4,284), between 20 and 24 (3,866), and between 25 and 29 (3,606), with total population of 21,394. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (738), above 75 (925), between 65 and 69 (968),between 60 and 64 (1,403), and between 55 and 59 (1,423), with total population of 5,457.

The population with age-group 5 to 9 had male to female ratio of 1.03, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 25 to 29 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.52. The age-groups 5 to 9, 10 to 14 had majority of male population while age-groups above 75, 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 15 to 19, 50 to 54, 60 to 64, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 35 to 39, 30 to 34, 20 to 24, 25 to 29 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups below 4, 55 to 59 had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 60.59 % (46,904 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 32.81 % with total number of 25,394. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 6.60 % with total number of 5,109. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 39.41 with total number of 30,503

There were 21,934 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 6,611. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 301 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Grade 1-12 Students & Schools

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 11,614 in Baraha Municipality with 5,805 (49.98%) of males and 5,809 (50.02%) females. There were total 88 schools. In average, 132 students were studying in each school.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Baraha Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Chhetri caste with total population of 17,203. There were as little as Halkhor caste with population of as little as 12 in total. Top five castes of people in Baraha Municipality are Chhetri (17,203), Brahmin - Hill (8,363), Rai (7,080), Tharu (4,047) and Magar (3,775) with total population of 40,468, which forms 52.28 percent out of total population of 77,408 in Baraha Municipality.

Population by Disability

Out of total population of 77,407, there were total 1,679 (2.17%) disabled persons in Baraha Municipality with 918 (54.68%) males and 761 (45.32%) females. The physically disabled persons were 607, while mentally disabled people were 128 and intellectually disabled were 45.

Similarly, there were 263 people who were blind and 263 people were deaf, while 31 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 207 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 135 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation

Out of total 17552 households in Baraha Municipality, there were 636 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 1,359 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 1,001 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 12,908houses were founded on wood.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 5,160 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 11,577 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 75 houses had roof of tile, 500 houses had RCC roofs, 40 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 5,745 out of 17,552 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 7,746 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 3,982 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

Utilities

In Baraha Municipality, there were total 2,756 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 13,367 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 303 houses had covered well while 535 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. With reference to source of fuel, 14,049 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 126 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 1,366 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (1,139), bio-gas (763), fuel electricity (31), etc.

Same as, total 14,022 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 3,054, while 228 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.80.

Facilities

out of 17,552 households in Baraha Municipality, 1,840 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 15,544 households reported of using at least one facility. According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 2,246 establishments in Baraha Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 5,396 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 3,038 and female engagement of 2,358 persons.In every business, there were an average of 2.40 people engaged with average males are 1.35 and females are 1.05.
