Palungtar is a Municipality, which is located in Gorkha district, Gandaki Province of Nepal. Palungtar has total 10 wards, which are scattered across 159 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Palungtar Municipality had total population of 38,174.

Wardwise Population and Households

As per 2011 population census, Palungtar Municipality had total 38,174 population with 16,604 males and 21,570 females. Out of total wards, ward number 7 had the largest population 5,141, while ward number 10 had least number of population with 5,141.

In terms of age, the largest population in Palungtar Municipality were between 10 and 14 years of age with total 5,134. Gender wise, there were 2,540 males and 2,594 females of the same age group. The least populated age group was between 70 and 74 with total 904 population, which consistes of 446 males and 458 females. Top 5 most populated age groups were between 10 and 14 (5,134), between 15 and 19 (4,222), between 5 and 9 (4,047), below 4 (3,222), between 20 and 24 (2,563) with total population of 19,188. In contrast, bottom 5 least populated age groups were between 70 and 74 (904), between 65 and 69 (1,253), above 75 (1,349), between 60 and 64 (1,533), and between 55 and 59 (1,687) with total population of 6,726. Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 10 and 14 (2,540), between 15 and 19 (1,988), between 5 and 9 (1,981), below 4 (1,598), and between 50 and 54 (940), with total population of 9,047. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (446), between 25 and 29 (590), between 65 and 69 (606),between 35 and 39 (620), and between 30 and 34 (640), with total population of 2,902. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 10 and 14 (2,594), between 15 and 19 (2,234), between 5 and 9 (2,066), between 20 and 24 (1,789), and below 4 (1,624), with total population of 10,307. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (458), between 65 and 69 (647), above 75 (662),between 60 and 64 (833), and between 55 and 59 (860), with total population of 3,460.

The population with age-group above 75 had male to female ratio of 1.04, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 25 to 29 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.37. The age-groups above 75 had majority of male population while age-groups below 4, 10 to 14, 70 to 74, 5 to 9, 55 to 59, 65 to 69, 15 to 19, 50 to 54, 60 to 64, 45 to 49, 40 to 44, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 20 to 24, 25 to 29 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 58.33 % (22,265 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 32.49 % with total number of 12,403. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 9.18 % with total number of 3,506. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 41.67 with total number of 15,909

There were 10,759 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 3,222. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 299 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Grade 1-12 Students & Schools

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 19,152 in Palungtar Municipality with 9,117 (47.60%) of males and 10,035 (52.40%) females. There were total 62 schools. In average, 309 students were studying in each school.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Palungtar Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Chhetri caste with total population of 6,221. There were as little as Bhote caste with population of as little as 11 in total. People of several other castes who live in Palungtar are Brahmin - Hill, Kumal, Sarki, Newar, Magar, Tamang, Kami, Gurung, Damai/Dholi, Sanyasi/Dashnami, Gharti/Bhujel, Muslim, Thakuri, Brahmu/Baramo, Gaine, Majhi, Badi, Kamar, Ghale, Rai, Darai, Tharu, Sunuwar, Haluwai, Bhote, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.

Top five castes of people in Palungtar Municipality are Chhetri (6,221), Brahmin - Hill (5,124), Kumal (3,939), Sarki (3,912) and Newar (3,430) with total population of 22,626, which forms 59.27 percent out of total population of 38,174 in Palungtar Municipality.

Out of total population of 38,174, there were total 793 (2.08%) disabled persons in Palungtar Municipality with 415 (52.33%) males and 378 (47.67%) females. The physically disabled persons were 239, while mentally disabled people were 64 and intellectually disabled were 30.

Similarly, there were 132 people who were blind and 154 people were deaf, while 12 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 111 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 51 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation

Out of total 9924 households in Palungtar Municipality, there were 9,177 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 362 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 107 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 248houses were founded on wood.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 1,374 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 6,433 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 1,758 houses had roof of tile, 325 houses had RCC roofs, 2 houses had roof of woods while 3 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 2,482 out of 9,924 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 3,511 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 3,920 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

Utilities

In Palungtar Municipality, there were total 5,780 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 9 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 947 houses had covered well while 1,331 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. With reference to source of fuel, 8,582 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 18 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 617 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (5), bio-gas (679), fuel electricity (9), etc.

Same as, total 8,708 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 1,182, while 9 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.88.

Facilities

out of 9,924 households in Palungtar Municipality, 1,378 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 8,475 households reported of using at least one facility. In those establishments, total 4,029 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 2,195 and female engagement of 1,834 persons.In every business, there were an average of 2.73 people engaged with average males are 1.49 and females are 1.24.
