Kalaiya is a Sub-Metropolitan City, which is located in Bara district, Province No. 2 of Nepal. Kalaiya has total 27 wards, which are scattered across 109 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City had total population of 123,659.

Wardwise Population and Households

As per 2011 population census, Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City had total 123,024 population with 63,648 males and 59,376 females. Out of total wards, ward number 1 had the largest population 7,385, while ward number 8 had least number of population with 7,385.

Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 5 and 9 (9,502), between 10 and 14 (8,728), below 4 (7,367), between 15 and 19 (6,675), and between 20 and 24 (4,801), with total population of 37,073. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (542), between 70 and 74 (794), between 65 and 69 (1,205),between 55 and 59 (1,671), and between 60 and 64 (1,700), with total population of 5,912. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 5 and 9 (8,906), between 10 and 14 (7,818), below 4 (7,053), between 15 and 19 (5,288), and between 20 and 24 (5,038), with total population of 34,103. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (454), between 70 and 74 (673), between 65 and 69 (1,066),between 60 and 64 (1,549), and between 55 and 59 (1,645), with total population of 5,387.

The population with age-group 15 to 19 had male to female ratio of 1.26, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 30 to 34 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.92. The age-groups 15 to 19, above 75, 70 to 74, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 40 to 44, 65 to 69, 10 to 14, 60 to 64, 5 to 9, 35 to 39, below 4, 55 to 59 had majority of male population while age-groups 25 to 29, 20 to 24, 30 to 34 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 55.73 % (68,916 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 39.93 % with total number of 49,374. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 3.83 % with total number of 4,734. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 43.76 with total number of 54,108

There were 28,383 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 14,420. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 508 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Grade 1-12 Students & Schools

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 2,982 in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City with 1,449 (48.59%) of males and 1,533 (51.41%) females. There were total 69 schools. In average, 43 students were studying in each school.

Top five castes of people in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City are Muslim (25,581), Yadav (11,023), Kurmi (9,195), Kanu (8,213) and Chamar/Harijan/Ram (7,009) with total population of 61,021, which forms 49.35 percent out of total population of 123,659 in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City.

Population by Disability

Out of total population of 123,024, there were total 1,177 (0.96%) disabled persons in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City with 676 (57.43%) males and 501 (42.57%) females. The physically disabled persons were 394, while mentally disabled people were 103 and intellectually disabled were 39.

Similarly, there were 305 people who were blind and 82 people were deaf, while 23 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 146 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 85 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation

Out of total 18689 households in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City, there were 1,599 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 6,859 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 731 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 8,960houses were founded on wood.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 3,505 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 182 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 8,931 houses had roof of tile, 5,514 houses had RCC roofs, 121 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 12,669 out of 18,689 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 4,163 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 1,578 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

Utilities

In Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City, there were total 1,987 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 16,047 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 54 houses had covered well while 81 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. With reference to source of fuel, 13,127 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 227 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 1,693 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (3,223), bio-gas (92), fuel electricity (8), etc.

Same as, total 13,481 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 4,786, while 87 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.72.

Facilities

out of 18,689 households in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City, 1,474 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 16,806 households reported of using at least one facility.
