Lahan is a Municipality, which is located in Siraha district, Province No. 2 of Nepal. Lahan has total 24 wards, which are scattered across 167 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Lahan Municipality had total population of 91,766.

Wardwise Population and Households

As per 2011 population census, Lahan Municipality had total 91,766 population with 45,515 males and 46,251 females. Out of total wards, ward number 24 had the largest population 7,289, while ward number 9 had least number of population with 7,289.

With respect to number of households, Lahan Municipality had total 17,182 households. The ward number 24 had most households with total 1,320, while ward number 9 had least number of households with total 398 number of households.Wardwise Population Chart of Lahan Municipality

As illustrated in the chart, the ratio of male to female population was 0.98, which indicates that Lahan Municipality had 2 percent lower males as compared to the females. Same as, the population to household ratio was 5.34, which means that in average 5.34 family members lived in each household.

Absentee Population

As of 2011, 3,601 population in Lahan Municipality were absent from their households, which equals to 3.92 percent of the total population. Population by Age Group

In terms of age, the largest population in Lahan Municipality were between 10 and 14 years of age with total 12,423. Gender wise, there were 6,299 males and 6,124 females of the same age group. The least populated age group was above 75 with total 939 population, which consistes of 470 males and 469 females. Top 5 most populated age groups were between 10 and 14 (12,423), between 5 and 9 (11,993), between 15 and 19 (9,682), below 4 (8,928), between 20 and 24 (7,463) with total population of 50,489. In contrast, bottom 5 least populated age groups were above 75 (939), between 70 and 74 (1,121), between 65 and 69 (1,746), between 60 and 64 (2,686), and between 55 and 59 (2,981) with total population of 9,473. The median age-group of total population falls between 35 and 39 and between 40 and 44 with average population of 5,508.

Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 10 and 14 (6,299), between 5 and 9 (6,225), between 15 and 19 (4,958), below 4 (4,604), and between 20 and 24 (3,431), with total population of 25,517. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (470), between 70 and 74 (575), between 65 and 69 (923),between 60 and 64 (1,304), and between 55 and 59 (1,580), with total population of 4,852. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 10 and 14 (6,124), between 5 and 9 (5,768), between 15 and 19 (4,724), below 4 (4,324), and between 20 and 24 (4,032), with total population of 24,972. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were above 75 (469), between 70 and 74 (546), between 65 and 69 (823),between 60 and 64 (1,382), and between 55 and 59 (1,401), with total population of 4,621.

The population with age-group 45 to 49 had male to female ratio of 1.13, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 30 to 34 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.79. The age-groups 45 to 49, 55 to 59, 65 to 69, 5 to 9, below 4, 15 to 19, 50 to 54, 70 to 74, 10 to 14 had majority of male population while age-groups 40 to 44, 60 to 64, 35 to 39, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups above 75 had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 59.52 % (54,616 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 36.34 % with total number of 33,344. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 4.15 % with total number of 3,806. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 40.48 with total number of 37,150

There were 23,780 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 8,928. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 375 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Grade 1-12 Students & Schools

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 4,438 in Lahan Municipality with 2,268 (51.10%) of males and 2,170 (48.90%) females. There were total 113 schools. In average, 39 students were studying in each school.

Mostly spoken language in Lahan is Maithili, which is spoken by 64,194 people. The Lahan has people who speak other languages, such as Tharu, Nepali, Urdu, Sunuwar, Magar, Tamang, Danuwar, Rajsthani, Doteli, Hindi, Newar, Bangla, Limbu, Rai, Bhojpuri, Magahi, Gurung, etc.

Population by Castes

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Lahan Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Tharu caste with total population of 15,660. There were as little as Dev caste with population of as little as 21 in total. People of several other castes who live in Lahan are Yadav, Koiri/Kushwaha, Muslim, Musahar, Chamar/Harijan/Ram, Teli, Dusadh/Pasawan/Pasi, Sudhi, Haluwai, Tatma/Tatwa, Chhetri, Dhanuk, Kathbaniyan, Brahmin - Hill, Mallaha, Khatwe, Hajam/Thakur, Kewat, Danuwar, Kami, Magar, Kumhar, Tamang, Sunuwar, Kalwar, Baraee, Rajput, Terai Others, Sonar, Damai/Dholi, Brahmin - Tarai, Marwadi, Sarki, Kayastha, Rai, Dhobi, Badhaee, Dom, Kurmi, Newar, Sanyasi/Dashnami, Halkhor, Lohar, Gharti/Bhujel, Mali, Bangali, Undefined Others, Kumal, Punjabi/Shikh, Limbu, Gaderi/Bhedhar, Amat, Rajdhob, Majhi, Kalar, Thakuri, Gurung, Dev, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.

Top five castes of people in Lahan Municipality are Tharu (15,660), Yadav (10,648), Koiri/Kushwaha (7,795), Muslim (7,382) and Musahar (7,380) with total population of 48,865, which forms 53.25 percent out of total population of 91,766 in Lahan Municipality.

Population by Disability

Out of total population of 91,766, there were total 1,448 (1.58%) disabled persons in Lahan Municipality with 822 (56.77%) males and 626 (43.23%) females. The physically disabled persons were 468, while mentally disabled people were 112 and intellectually disabled were 38.

Similarly, there were 295 people who were blind and 189 people were deaf, while 31 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 159 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 156 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation

Out of total 17182 households in Lahan Municipality, there were 737 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 4,676 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 941 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 10,572houses were founded on wood.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 5,200 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 1,235 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 7,033 houses had roof of tile, 3,275 houses had RCC roofs, 169 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 11,002 out of 17,182 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 3,971 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 2,076 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

Utilities

In Lahan Municipality, there were total 2,040 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 13,123 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 93 houses had covered well while 1,399 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. With reference to source of fuel, 8,498 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 174 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 1,878 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (6,435), bio-gas (46), fuel electricity (4), etc.

Same as, total 13,164 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 3,323, while 288 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.77.

Facilities

out of 17,182 households in Lahan Municipality, 2,238 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 14,498 households reported of using at least one facility. According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 2,126 establishments in Lahan Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 6,196 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 4,550 and female engagement of 1,646 persons.In every business, there were an average of 2.91 people engaged with average males are 2.14 and females are 0.77.
