Dharan is a Sub-Metropolitan City, which is located in Sunsari district, Province No. 1 of Nepal. Dharan has total 20 wards, which are scattered across 192 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City had total population of 137,705.

Wardwise Population and Households

As per 2011 population census, Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City had total 137,705 population with 64,671 males and 73,034 females. Out of total wards, ward number 15 had the largest population 19,879, while ward number 2 had least number of population with 19,879.

In terms of age, the largest population in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City were between 15 and 19 years of age with total 16,416. However, gender wise largest population age group differs from the total population, such as largest male population falls between 15 and 19 with total 8,111 while female population falls between 20 and 24 with total 8,465 population. The least populated age group was between 70 and 74 with total 2,018 population, which consistes of 943 males and 1,075 females. Top 5 most populated age groups were between 15 and 19 (16,416), between 10 and 14 (15,108), between 20 and 24 (14,963), between 5 and 9 (12,949), between 25 and 29 (12,588) with total population of 72,024. Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 15 and 19 (8,111), between 10 and 14 (7,652), between 5 and 9 (6,643), between 20 and 24 (6,498), and between 25 and 29 (5,063), with total population of 33,967. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (943), above 75 (1,216), between 65 and 69 (1,288),between 60 and 64 (1,726), and between 55 and 59 (2,129), with total population of 7,302. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 20 and 24 (8,465), between 15 and 19 (8,305), between 25 and 29 (7,525), between 10 and 14 (7,456), and between 5 and 9 (6,306), with total population of 38,057. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (1,075), above 75 (1,436), between 65 and 69 (1,439),between 60 and 64 (2,114), and between 55 and 59 (2,238), with total population of 8,302.

The population with age-group below 4 had male to female ratio of 1.08, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 25 to 29 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.67. The age-groups below 4, 5 to 9, 10 to 14 had majority of male population while age-groups 15 to 19, 55 to 59, 50 to 54, 45 to 49, 65 to 69, 40 to 44, 70 to 74, above 75, 60 to 64, 35 to 39, 20 to 24, 30 to 34, 25 to 29 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 67.55 % (93,021 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 27.08 % with total number of 37,287. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 5.37 % with total number of 7,397. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 32.45 with total number of 44,684

There were 43,466 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 9,230. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 212 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

Grade 1-12 Students & Schools

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 6,515 in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City with 3,128 (48.01%) of males and 3,387 (51.99%) females. There were total 147 schools. In average, 44 students were studying in each school.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City was inhabitted by mostly the people of Rai caste with total population of 28,536. Top five castes of people in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City are Rai (28,536), Limbu (16,061), Newar (15,237), Chhetri (14,692) and Tamang (10,003) with total population of 84,529, which forms 61.38 percent out of total population of 137,705 in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City.

Population by Disability

Out of total population of 137,705, there were total 1,679 (1.22%) disabled persons in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City with 867 (51.64%) males and 812 (48.36%) females. The physically disabled persons were 497, while mentally disabled people were 163 and intellectually disabled were 68.

Similarly, there were 172 people who were blind and 242 people were deaf, while 33 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 308 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 196 people had multiple disabilities.

Household Foundation

Out of total 32693 households in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, there were 3,074 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 11,802 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 8,234 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 8,700houses were founded on wood.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 541 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 17,663 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 81 houses had roof of tile, 13,755 houses had RCC roofs, 139 houses had roof of woods while 0 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 955 out of 32,693 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 23,764 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 7,736 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

Utilities

In Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, there were total 30,678 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 58 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 94 houses had covered well while 188 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. With reference to source of fuel, 11,405 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 474 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 20,259 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (16), bio-gas (213), fuel electricity (12), etc.

Same as, total 31,136 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 1,065, while 22 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.95.

Facilities

out of 32,693 households in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, 2,010 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 30,389 households reported of using at least one facility.
