Mahakulung is a Rural Municipality, which is located in Solukhumbu district, Province No. 1 of Nepal. Mahakulung has total 5 wards, which are scattered across 648 square kilometers of geographical area. According to 2011 Census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Mahakulung Rural Municipality had total population of 11,452.

As of 2011, 134 population in Mahakulung Rural Municipality were absent from their households, which equals to 1.17 percent of the total population. Absence of males was 118, which equals to 2.10 percent of total 5,619 males. Same as, 16 females were absent, which equals to 0.27 percent of 5,833 females. At least one member of 117 (4.78 percent) households were absent.

Gender wise, top 5 most age groups male population were between 5 and 9 (900), between 10 and 14 (775), below 4 (691), between 15 and 19 (620), and between 20 and 24 (413), with total population of 3,399. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (57), above 75 (65), between 65 and 69 (101),between 60 and 64 (160), and between 55 and 59 (204), with total population of 587. With regards to female population, top 5 age groups females were between 5 and 9 (922), between 10 and 14 (786), below 4 (771), between 15 and 19 (656), and between 25 and 29 (414), with total population of 3,549. In contrast, bottom 5 least age group male population were between 70 and 74 (50), above 75 (52), between 65 and 69 (105),between 60 and 64 (135), and between 55 and 59 (171), with total population of 513.

The population with age-group above 75 had male to female ratio of 1.25, which states that this age group had maximum males as compared to females. Similarly, age-group 25 to 29 had most female population as compared to male population with male to female ratio of 0.85. The age-groups above 75, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 50 to 54, 70 to 74, 20 to 24 had majority of male population while age-groups 10 to 14, 5 to 9, 65 to 69, 15 to 19, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, below 4, 35 to 39, 30 to 34, 25 to 29 had majority of female population as per male-female ratios. Moreover, age-groups had eqivalent or almost equal numbers of male and female population with male-female ratios of 1.

There were 53.94 % (6,177 ) of independent population, the working age people between ages of 15 and 64 years. The dependent children, ages below 15 years, were 42.31 % with total number of 4,845. The dependent elderly population, aged 65 and above were 3.75 % with total number of 430. As such, total dependent population including children and elderly people were 46.06 with total number of 5,275

There were 2,646 women of child-bearing age-group of 15 to 49 years. Same as, the todlers or children of 4 years or below were 1,462. The ratio of woman of child-bearing age and the number of todlers state that, approximately 553 children were born per 1,000 women. This number is also roughly used as fertility levels when direct measures of births are not available.

According to Nepal Government records as of 2017, there were total 3,940 in Mahakulung Rural Municipality with 1,904 (48.32%) of males and 2,036 (51.68%) females. There were total 19 schools. In average, 207 students were studying in each school.

According to 2011 census conducted by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Mahakulung Rural Municipality was inhabitted by mostly the people of Kulung caste with total population of 9,111. There were as little as Magar caste with population of as little as 13 in total. People of several other castes who live in Mahakulung are Nachhiring, Sherpa, Kami, Kalar, Chhetri, Hajam/Thakur, Damai/Dholi, Khaling, Brahmin - Hill, Sarki, Yamphu, Magar, etc. Only the population of castes with above 1,000 population are illustrated in the table.

Top five castes of people in Mahakulung Rural Municipality are Kulung (9,111), Nachhiring (653), Sherpa (623), Kami (376) and Kalar (319) with total population of 11,082, which forms 96.77 percent out of total population of 11,452 in Mahakulung Rural Municipality.

Out of total population of 11,452, there were total 184 (1.61%) disabled persons in Mahakulung Rural Municipality with 105 (57.07%) males and 79 (42.93%) females. The physically disabled persons were 75, while mentally disabled people were 9 and intellectually disabled were 10.

Similarly, there were 21 people who were blind and 25 people were deaf, while 6 people were both blind and deaf. Moreover, 24 persons had reported of having speech problems. Total 14 people had multiple disabilities.

Out of total 2450 households in Mahakulung Rural Municipality, there were 2,341 houses that were founded on mud bonded while 3 houses were cement bonded. Same as, 2 households were reported of being founded on RCC piller, 88houses were founded on wood.

With respect to wall of the houses, 2,271 houses were mud bonded, 3 houses were cement bonded, 12 houses were wood planks bonded, 150 houses were bamboo bonded and 2 houses had unbaked bricks on their outer walls.Rest of the houses were reported of having other types of outer wall, while some of them reported nothing of having the outer wall bonding.

There were several types of house roofs reported. Total 1,076 houses were reported of having thatch roofs while 290 houses had galvanized roofs. Similarly, 2 houses had roof of tile, 7 houses had RCC roofs, 552 houses had roof of woods while 2 houses were reported having roof of mud. As per 2011 CBS census, some of the houses had other types of roofs while some didn't report about the roof structure.

With respect to the toilets, 1,377 out of 2,450 houses didn't report of having a private toilet for their households. Nevertheless, 430 houses were reported of having flush toilet while 642 houses reported having ordinary toilets.

In Mahakulung Rural Municipality, there were total 2,097 houses, which were equiped with piped tap water resources while 0 houses were reported of having tubewell water facilities. Same as, 14 houses had covered well while 78 houses didn't have any cover on their tubewell. Other resources of water facilities were spout water (244) and river stream (14), which were reported of the household's source of water.

With reference to source of fuel, 2,441 households reported their source of fuel as firewood while 7 households had kerosene as their fuel source. The LP gas was used by 0 households as a source of fuel. Moreover, other sources of fuel were cow dung (0), bio-gas (0), fuel electricity (0), etc.

Same as, total 748 households had reported of having electricity as the source of their household's lighting. The households still using kerosene as source of light were 480, while 574 households used solar energy as source of lights. Total 0 households also reported of using bio-gas as a source of light. The ratio of use of electricity as compared to other source of light was 0.31.

out of 2,450 households in Mahakulung Rural Municipality, 640 houses reported of having no any facility in their household while 1,796 households reported of using at least one facility. Households using at least one facility, such as radio, television, internet, etc. have been illustrated in the table below.Radio was used by the maximum households with total users of 1,680, while MobilePhone was the next mostly used facilities with total household users of 855.

According to 2018 Economic Census, there are total 369 establishments in Mahakulung Rural Municipality that are involved in various economic activities. In those establishments, total 1,466 persons are engaged for the economic activities, as a self-employed or an employee, with total male engagement of 711 and female engagement of 755 persons.In every business, there were an average of 3.97 people engaged with average males are 1.93 and females are 2.05. The ratio of male to female engagement in the establishments are 0.94, which means as many as 0.94 males are enagement in the economic activities per female.
