In 2017 election of Barahatal Rural Municipality (Surkhet district), candidate Tej Bahadur Basnet of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,221 (35.38%) votes out of total votes of 9,104 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Tara Keshar Gautam of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 2,914 (23.64%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 2,969 (16.31) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Shobha Kumari Sharma of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,312 (36.46%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Asha Thapa Karki of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,190 (25.73%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 2,582 (14.21) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 211 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 131 (62.09%) males and 80 (37.91%) females. Moreover, there were total 46 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 75 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 40 females and 34 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
