In 2017 election of Madhuwan Municipality (Bardiya district), candidate Ganesh Bahadur Chhetri of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 8,431 (40.85%) votes out of total votes of 20,641 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Durga Bahadur Oli of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 5,923 (20.37%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 6,287 (15.23) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Subarani Tharu of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 7,523 (37.13%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Hira Kumari Chaudhary of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 5,822 (20.96%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,915 (17.07) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 194 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 112 (57.73%) males and 82 (42.27%) females. Moreover, there were total 39 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 73 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 37 females and 33 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
